Can a pensioner get a mortgage?

Spain is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations for foreigners to retire to. Its incredible quality of life, which includes the warm weather, beautiful landscapes, laid-back ambience and great gastronomy, make it a truly attractive country to acquire property. As a pensioner, you might wonder, can I get a mortgage? The answer is yes, you can get one for your international retirement.

Getting a loan over the age of 60 is possible in Spain. There are certain criteria you will have to meet to be eligible, but it is not that different from other types available in today’s market. Banks will need to see proof of your updated income and savings, check your credit score and analyse any debt you might have. If all the paperwork looks in order, you may get the lender to approve your request fairly quickly. However, you will need to prove you can devote up to one-third of your monthly pension towards paying your mortgage, and this will have to be paid off by the time you are 70 years old, with certain exceptions on a case-to-case basis.
