Having a medium-sized terrace or balcony at home is always a great advantage, especially in spring when temperatures rise and the weather invites you to sit outside. A terrace or balcony gives us the chance to enjoy the outdoors without having to leave the house, but to get the most out of it, it is important to have functional décor that matches the rest of your home. It doesn’t matter if the terrace or balcony isn’t very big; you can take great advantage of the space available with the right decorative items and furniture. However, beware not to saturate it!

If you’re set to move into a home with a terrace or balcony or you want to give one you already have a makeover, this article offers a few decoration tips ranging from some of the latest trends to timeless recommendations that never go out of fashion. Take note and get down to work to enjoy your terrace this spring/summer.

Ideas for to decorating your medium-sized terrace or balcony

Plants

Plants are always a great way to inexpensively decorate a balcony. With the right plants you will achieve a fresh, natural look, and with flowers you will be able to add colour to your balcony, making it more attractive to the eye and a cosier getaway spot. When choosing the types of plants you’re going to use, it’s sensible to consider their size, their sunlight and/or shade requirements and whether they’ll thrive on what your balcony/terrace has to offer, and how easy they are to care for, especially if you’re not sure how green-fingered you are.

There is a wide variety of plants that are perfect for balconies and terraces, but the most suitable are those that can withstand changes in temperature and weather conditions such as rain and wind.

If your balcony or terrace is roomy enough, you might like to set up a mini vegetable garden, or if not, there are small aromatic herbs that fit in any corner, that you can use to condiment your favourite dishes.

Furniture

Make sure you choose terrace furniture that leaves you enough room to move around. If you only have limited space, you can alternatively opt for folding tables and chairs that can be put away when not in use. In terms of materials, we recommend natural materials such as wood or vegetable fibres such as jute, rattan, bamboo or wicker.  This type of furniture should be suitable for outdoor use, so you can be sure that it is resistant and durable.

If you have enough space, an excellent option to enjoy your balcony is to place a sun lounger where you can read, sunbathe, take a nap or simply rest and relax. Remember to place cushions to make the space more comfortable and play with colour.

Lighting

Terraces can also be used at night, and, to do so, there is nothing better than placing warm, energy-saving lights such as LED light fixtures. You can opt for garlands of lights hanging from the ceiling or wall, which will create a cosy atmosphere. There is an infinite number of models on the market, ranging from the simplest to ones with intricate decorations, shapes and colours made of paper, plastic, glass, etc. For occasions when you want a more intimate ambience, scented candles are the best option, and if you want to save even more, you can use solar lamps that are charged by the sun during the day and light up the terrace at night.

Colours

Colours tend to change with each year’s fashion trends. 2023 features some shades that are timeless and never go out of fashion, but there are also new ones. If you want to go for a discreet, more classical style, you can always opt for neutral colours such as white, beige and grey, but if you feel like ramping it up with brighter colours, try any variety of blue, mustard, coral, yellow and/or purple. You can play with contrasts and combine nude colours with other more striking ones using cushions; but remember that white always gives a greater feeling of spaciousness.

Awnings and parasols

If you don’t want to miss going out on the terrace during the hottest hours of the day, the best thing to do is to put up an awning or a parasol. They will give you a cooler patch of shade and protect you from the sun’s harmful radiation. Awnings can also contribute to energy savings in the home of up to 80%. We recommend you choose an awning or retractable sunshade that you can regulate depending on the different hours of sunshine you receive on your balcony, as well as being able to close them at night and take advantage of the cooler night breeze. Another advantage of placing an awning or sunshade on the balcony is that it provides additional privacy.

These are just a few ideas for you to decorate your medium-sized terrace or balcony; remember that you can adapt these tips to your space, tastes and budget to get the style you want.
